Prototyping System for ZiLOG Z8 Encore!®
Packages

The Prototyping System main board and all Option Kits and accessory parts can be ordered individually from ECROS Technology.  See the descriptions of the individual items for details.  In addition, groups of options have been selected as pre-defined packages.  Ordering a package is easier than selecting individual options and can save you money.  Packages can be supplied fully assembled and tested at extra cost.  The table below shows the available packages and which options they include.  To go to the description of each option, click the name in the left hand column.

Assembly and Test

Warranty

Assembled systems are warranted to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 90 days from the data of shipment.  This warranty does not cover damage caused by user modifications or improper use.  ECROS Technology will work with you to quickly and economically repair your Prototyping System however problems came about.

Assembly

Because the ECROS Technology Prototyping System is so flexible and configurable, having it assembled for you could require you to specify a large number of options.  Instead, this section describes how ECROS Technology will assemble the system unless you specify otherwise at the time of ordering.

Display Option

Gold and platinum packages will have the LCD assembled directly to the main board.  The 16-pin header will be on the board and the socket on the LCD.  This may not work if you plan to put an expansion board between the main board and the LCD.  The expansion board will need to pass through the LCD connection.  You can offset the LCD up or down by 0.1 in. relative to its position on the main board, but for the platinum package it will no longer line up with the hole in the enclosure.  To keep the LCD in the same position with an expansion board between it and the main board, you need either to have the main board connector in the offset position or to have sockets on both the main board and the LCD with a double-ended pin header on the expansion board.  If you specify the former, the LCD, screws, standoffs, etc. will not be assembled to the board (except for testing).  If you specify the latter, custom charges will apply.

The LED backlight driver will be assembled according to the standard build with a backlight current of 91 mA.

Enclosure

The platinum package will be assembled into the enclosure including the cutting of holes for the power jack and, for the 171-i enclosure only, for the display.  If you select a straight debug header, you will need a Tiny-TIM or to mount the ZiLOG TIM vertically to this header.  If you select a right-angle debug header, you will need to cut a hole in the enclosure for the TIM or to remove the board from the enclosure to use the debug connection.  To use the ZiLOG Smart Cable, unless you remove the board you will need to make up an extender cable.

To clear the bosses that hold the Serpac enclosure together, holes need to be drilled out on the main board.  It is much better to do this before assembling components to the board.  If you order enclosures, ECROS Technology will make this modification to all assembled boards unless you request otherwise.  You can also ask for un-assembled boards to be modified in this way.

Expansion

The silver, gold and platinum packages include the two parts of the main expansion connector.  Three questions arise - a) which part goes on the main board and which on the expansion board, b) does the part on the main board go on the top or the bottom and c) does it go in the J3 or J4 position.  Unless you specify otherwise, the socket part will be assembled to the top of the board as J3.  Although not marked on the silkscreen (there isn't room), J3 is closer to the MCU.

The above will be what you want if you intend to mount various expansion boards on top of the main board.  The socket is the more expensive half of the connector, so putting the header on the expansion boards makes them cheaper.  Using J3 rather than J4 leaves you the maximum space on the expansion board, although you will have to cut the board off quite close to the header to clear the display, if fitted.  You can also wire from J4 to the big prototyping area on the main board.
